Kira Weber (b. 1948)
Kira Weber, born in Geneva in 1948, revolves her oeuvre around the “everyday object” and revives the concept of the still life through oil and pastel. At once vivid and intimate, ordinary objects such as onions, lemons, cups and saucers are rendered in a timeless manner and are elevated into monumental forms.
The following text is taken from Kira Weber – Oils: 1999-2007 (Patrick Cramer, Editeur, Geneva 2007)
Kira Weber paints [still life] with realism and an aesthetic sense in a post-modern period during which dissecting, carving up or even doing away completely with reality are very much the norm. Her compositions are often larger than life; she brings out the details, blows them up and places them in the foreground of her pictures. The all-pervading light, diffuse or fragmented, takes hold of those looking at them and captures their gaze, drawing them into her world. It is precisely this approximate and sometimes hazy depiction of reality that invites us not only to contemplate her subjects with our eyes – they evoke our senses of touch, smell and taste…
