Collection / Of / James / Willis - Dan Mask, Liberia 10 inches The Dan are best known for their tradition of individualistically stylized and sometimes idealistic carved masks. Eleven distinct types of the Dan mask can be identified today. Each mask is created with a different intention and performed at separate functions. This particular example is the Bugle, the war masquerade. Intended to incite fear, the tubular eyes, rough features and protruding forehead are characteristic of this warrior masquerade. Often performed in a costume consisting of a thick raffia shirt, a black feather headdress and a dark mantle, the Bugle is accompanied by a group of warriors, participating in a lively dance demonstrating great strength and dignity.
