Alfons Borrell (b. 1931)
This Spanish artist and amateur astronomer was born in June of 1931 in Barcelona and became a resident of Sabadell at the end of the Civil War. As an art student he was a frequent visitor of Anglada Camarassa's studio, and a pupil at the Sant Jordi Art School of Barcelona. Early in his career, he participated in the Sabadell painting biennials (1953-1959), where his works evolved from stylized figuration to abstract expressionism. He also completed a number of works in the field of mural decoration. In 1960, he took part in the foundation and first actions of the Gallot group, who were well known for avant-garde activities in Barcelona, in the line of what was called action painting. After several years’ hiatus from the art world, he started painting again in 1970. This new stage meant new works of gesture and character – of contained and sober forms in daring colors – all resulting in a unique exuberance and vitality. His work exhibits regularly at art galleries in Barcelona, Paris, Tokyo and New York.
