Bini / Igbo

Bini / Igbo - Ibo Mask
Height: 15 inches
Helmet mask, painted white and black, with tripartite crested coiffure. This "Mother Spirit Mask"
may represent one of the two female characters, which appear during the Okpegerede masquerades in
northeastern Iboland: Eze Mwanyi (Queen of Women), or Nwamma (Child of Beauty), or here Nwanyi
Ogada, because of the tripatite coiffure. This type of mask is found in many varieties in Iboland
as well as in the whole of Idomaland.
Provenance: Private collection, Los Angeles.
