Bamileke
The Bamileke live in the western grasslands of Cameroon.
Different chiefdoms and kingdoms of various sizes have been
formed among the tribes of Cameroon. The art styles of the
peoples in the Grasslands are very hard to differentiate due
to the complex and recent migration patterns that are typical
of the region. The art of Cameroon is characterized by great
vitality and movement.
The Bamileke are the most important Cameroon Grassland kingdom
in the south. Bamileke masks were worn by the leading dancer
during state ceremonies or annual festivities. They produced
various masks carved of wood in human features, often combined
with animal horns. They also produced fine ivory and monumental
wood carvings such as door and window frames carved with animal
and human figures.
